The story of Freemasonry and the Civil War by Allen E. Roberts begins with the political turmoil in the months leading up to the secession of the southern states, and the effect it had on the Grand Lodges and Masons throughout the country. With well-documented communications between each side as they sought a peaceful resolution, “House Undivided” demonstrates how Masons conducted themselves on the field of battle, the field hospitals, the prisons, and during the period of reconstruction afterwards. Time and again, brotherly love prevailed over feverish political opinions.
There is also a detailed list of pominent Masons who served their countries during the Civil War. “House Divided” is a great read for those who like American history, and illuminates how this troubled time affected Masonry, and vice-versa.
